Still, the term con africana is not without tension. Some argue it could ghettoize artists who simply want to be seen as Spanish-language entertainers, not “Afro-Spanish” or “Afro-Latino.” Others embrace it as a political reclamation. The singer (ex-ChocQuibTown) puts it best: “Mi español no es menos español por ser negro. Y mi negritud no es menos negra por hablar español. Ese es el punto.”
