The problem is not the cruelty itself, but its purpose. For much of the middle third, the violence becomes repetitive—flaying, impalement, psychological breaking—without advancing character or theme. By the fourth torture scene, the shock has worn off, replaced by a weary numbness. The Amazons begin to feel less like a believable culture and more like a carnival of horrors designed to provoke.
