The death of a member presents a dual challenge for professional bar associations: an emotional/humanitarian duty to honor the deceased and a technical/administrative duty to protect clients and colleagues. This paper analyzes the protocols implemented by the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Lugo (ICAL) following notable deaths within its roster. Through a case-study methodology and comparative analysis with other Galician bar associations, we identify "best practices" in three areas: (1) (notification of courts, suspension of deadlines, safeguarding of client files); (2) Ritual and memorial (official obituaries, minute of silence at the Junta de Gobierno , and the traditional cruz in the plenary hall); and (3) Ethical closure (handling of outstanding fees and privileged information). Our findings suggest that a standardized, compassionate protocol not only prevents legal malpractice but also reinforces collegial solidarity—a core value of the Lugo legal community.
