For the Indian mother or homemaker, morning is a strategy game. "Don’t mix the sambar with the rice; it will become soggy by lunch." "Separate the rotis with foil." The lunch box is a love letter, packed tightly into a tiffin carrier, followed by the eternal struggle: finding the matching lid.

Unlike the West where people jog alone with headphones, Indians walk in groups. The local park at 7 PM is a moving parliament. Uncles discuss politics and investments. Aunties discuss the new neighbor’s wedding dowry. Teenagers pretend not to know their parents while simultaneously asking for money to buy golgappa (pani puri) from the vendor at the gate.
